Bona Fide Bragging Rights~!

Answer #9:

Only showing off.

The US felt thoroughly humiliated when the USSR placed the first satellite up there.
When the commies put the first man in space, got a probe into Venus, and all that...

The US decided to put a man on the moon. Not that it was particularly useful, but it was horribly expensive. Expensive enough that the USSR couldn't afford it.

Reasoning that sending guys to Mars would be so expensive that it would be completely unfeasible and it would make the superpower who attempted such a feat bankrupt, the Moon was the final stage of the Space Race.

Answer #10:

Yes there was a Cold War, so if there was cold war.. forged everything automatically??

Even the Soviet Union became eyewitnesses moon-landing, because they are intercepting radio transmissions directly from the Apollo moon :D
